Why TIDE Academy?
Top of Page

TIDE is an exciting school as it's a unique small comprehensive high school in Sequoia Union High School District. I'm excited to be part of the intimate setting of a small school and have the opportunity to help open up the school. (How often does an educator have the opportunity to open a school, helping set in place systems and processes, and build school culture?). I also appreciate the innovative staff, where curriculum is linked across several subjects, and Career Technical Education is part of every single student's experience at TIDE.

What I do and why

I am the Vice Principal at TIDE. I previously was a science teacher for 18 years at a large, comprehensive high school in the district. As a super proud science geek, helping students grow and understand the "how" and the "why" behind things is extremely rewarding.

Short Background

As a science teacher for 18 years, I designed and implemented a Biotechnology program at Carlmont High School that included three courses of study. I also was part of the team that founded the Biotechnology Institute (BTI), a cross-curricular, small-learning community where students take science-themed English and social studies classes as well as a series of courses in biotechnology. I have taken several classes in Costa Rica to help researchers collect data and protect Leatherback Sea Turtles as well as to aid in reforestation projects. I enjoy creating change in education, wanting relevancy for students, and a way for students to link what they are learning with what they will do as a career.

After 18 wonderful years as a classroom teacher, I decided to leave the classroom and become the Career Technical Education (CTE) Coordinator for the San Mateo County Office of Education. Missing the hum and buzz of a school, I returned to TIDE as the Vice Principal in January of TIDE's inaugural school year (2020).
