Physical Education Course 1 emphasizes instruction in the areas of physical fitness, socialization, teamwork, sportspersonship, health/wellness concepts, movement skills, and the knowledge of activities. The P.E. program at TIDE Academy promotes self-confidence, creates opportunities for goal-setting skills, and the lifelong benefits of wellness.

  • Ninth-grade students operate using higher-order thinking skills. They evaluate performance, analyze data, reflect on personal goals, and adjust behavior as necessary. Students are now at the cognitive stage when they can synthesize much of what they have learned in the earlier grade levels and apply it to new learning situations. Course 1 addresses rhythms/dance, and individual and dual activities. Instruction on the effects of physical activity on dynamic health and the mechanics of body movement is integrated throughout the school year. Course 1 is designed to be taken before Course 2, and, therefore, is most appropriate for the ninth-grade students or other students taking their first high school physical education course.

  • Students in P.E. I at TIDE will be able to:
    • Set realistic personal fitness goals
    • Develop individual skills associated with teamwork
    • Think critically and collaborate with peers.
    • Create and follow fitness programs.
    • Identify fitness components that are essential to a balanced and well-rounded fitness plan.
    • Keep a documented fitness log to track exercises and progress.

High School Course 2- Students are becoming more interested in their personal development and recognize the value of high-level physical performance for their future lives and careers. Tenth-graders continue to improve their cognitive functioning. As tenth-graders mature, their egocentrism decreases. Through social interaction, they learn they are not the sole focus of attention. They are learning to express their emotions in more appropriate ways, and their moral reasoning is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Course 2 is their last opportunity for formal instruction in physical education. Course 2 addresses combative, gymnastics/ tumbling, and team activities. Instruction on the effects of physical activity on dynamic health and the mechanics of body movement is integrated throughout the school year. Course 2 is designed to be taken after Course 1 is completed. Typically, tenth-graders enroll in Course 2, though some students will take Course 2 as eleventh- or twelfth-graders.

Below you will find some of our P.E. I students working on their cardiovascular activity at Bedwell Bayfront Park. This is a trail that is near campus, it is only a 5 minute walk. Students get the opportunity to increase their cardiovascular fitness component every time they participate in their cardio activities. Students attend this trail twice a week and perform cardiovascular activities such as the mile run and power walks. These activities boost and elevate their fitness levels and prepare them for the fitness state testing.

During the strength fitness unit, students plan and complete specific exercises using resistance bands or loop bands that will strengthen their skeletal muscle system. Students learn about safety, the importance of warming up, form and technique using resistance bands, a variety of resistance exercises, and how to increase muscle strength. They also learn to distinguish which muscles are being targeted with specific exercises. Below you will find students performing exercises using resistance bands that are targeting upper and lower extremity muscles.
